Cocoa is a species belonging to the mauve family. Its fruit, the cocoa bean, is an important food ingredient: it is the raw material for cocoa butter, cocoa powder and chocolate.

Cocoa was considered sacred by the Central American Indians (Mayans, Aztecs, Olmians, etc.) and the drink made from it was considered a drink of the gods.

The main active ingredients of cocoa: 1–2% theobromine in fermented seeds, 0.2–0.3% caffeine, traces of theophylline, approx. 5% catechin extractant, polymer procyanidin, 50-60% fatty oil.

Cocoa is primarily used as a spice. Chocolate massage is also very common in the spa industry due to the skin cleansing, nourishing and detoxifying effects of the active ingredients in chocolate with a high cocoa butter content. Due to its theobromine content, cocoa butter externally aids fat burning processes. Flavonoids inhibit the formation of free radicals responsible for skin aging.
